The guide
Kyoto rewards the slow walker. Stay north of Nijo and the mornings belong to the neighbourhood: shutters going up, the smell of roasting hojicha, schoolchildren cutting through the shrine grounds. Our two houses here are both machiya — narrow wooden townhouses built for merchants, restored with their courtyard gardens intact.
